St Michael’s Dental Surgery has been a customer of Woodlane Dental Equipment LTD since it opened and had two A-dec 500 packages installed.
Over the past years the practice has grown in popularity because of its excellent customer service combined with quality facilities and of course the highest standard of dentistry.
Dr Calum McPhearson, owner of the practice, had a desire to build on the growth in its popularity and client base. Therefore, in late 2014 he approached Woodlane Dental to seek advice on how he could incorporate a third surgery to enable the practice to cope with the additional work load. Various options were explored and subsequently the decision was made to relocate the existing kitchen/staff room and then convert the vacated room into the third surgery that would include a decontamination area.
Working with Dr McPhearson we were able to produce a design that took account of the sloping ceiling and long, narrow aspect of the room. The design of the additional surgery ensures that patients will continue to receive the kind of service in modern facilities that they have come to expect from the prestigious St Michael’s Dental Practice.
Dr Calum McPhearson was never in doubt when selecting the brand of equipment required. He knew from experience that for the most suitable equipment, it had to be A-dec, as his existing two A-dec packages had proved reliable, offering superior comfort and ergonomics. There had been a few changes to the range since Calum was last in the market for equipment. Mindful of this, Matt from Woodlane Dental met with Calum on A-dec’s stand, at the BDIA show, to talk through the option available. Initially we spoke about the recently launched 400 package, however the benefits of the 500 were such that Calum decided to upgrade to A-dec’s flag ship model.
With ergonomics in mind Calum opted to build in a micro-motor from NSK along with the deluxe touch pad for optimum control over this versatile accessory. The micro-motor is a very versatile tool that is used as a traditional ‘slow speed’ instrument, or for endodontic treatments, or as a replacement or to work alongside a high speed drill. A rarely considered advantage which appealed to Calum was its ability to work as a ‘high speed’ drill but without the noise patients associate with dentists. The high speed “whizz” which characterises the fear in some patients of a dental practice is exactly what St Michael’s Dental Practice has tried to eradicate, their motto being ‘no fear dentistry’.
The existing compressor was deemed suitable for the increased work load and therefore all that was required was for the services to be adjusted. However, the decision was made to replace the old wetline suction system with Cattani’s latest TurboSmart 2V. The TurboSmart 2V suction system is designed as a replacement for wetline systems where small bore pipe work has been used. This represents a huge leap forward in suction systems allowing for high negative pressure as well as a good flow rate thus ensuring the best of both worlds. This was the first of the new pumps that Woodlane Dental installed and although the TurboSmart has been available for many years, it has proven itself to be always a good pump. The quality of suction produced by the machine was extremely impressive.
In order to fulfil the requirement for a decontamination area in the new surgery, Woodlane Dental designed a wood framed glass dividing screen to provide a defined decontamination area, along with custom designed cabinetry with Corian worktops. Calum and his team chose a suitably classy range of colours from the extensive selection available in order to create a neutral pallet with some very purposeful splashes of colour to give a contemporary look and feel.
Making use of Woodlane Dental’s partner companies we were able to provide all the services required including the electrical works, the decorating, flooring and carpentry.
